Rather than dispose of this domain name after the competition I kept it as my personal blog. I primarily use this site to complain about the world and promote website projects.

BMW X5 Fan won’t stop after shutting off. Problem Solved.

Are you sitting in your BMW X5 with the keys out of the ignition and your interior heating/cooling fan is still running? Are you Googling “BMW X5 FAN WON’T STOP” trying to find a solution so that your battery does not die while you are at work for the day?

I was in exactly the same situation a week ago.

My first thought was to pull the fuze for the fan except that the factory owners manual does not have any information on which fuses do what.
My second thought was to disconnect the battery, but the battery is in the rear buried below the spare tire and a number of large tight bolts and the factory included tool kit does not have the proper sized wrenches.
Third thought? Call the dealership. They told me over the phone there was no fuze to pull that would make the fan stop but they could pick up the car later in the afternoon and look at it. My BMW is out of warranty so I knew this would be a $500 + Solution.
Fourth thought? Get on line on my smart phone and Google the answer. Google told me it was most likely a bad Final Stage Unit and by removing a panel near the passenger footwell I could disconnect the unit which would turn off the fan.

Google was correct. Luckily I had a leatherman tool on hand with a phillips head screwdriver. Two screws removed and I had access to the connector plug to disconnect the Final Stage Unit. After unplugging this connection the fan stopped.

Later that evening I did a little more research on line and found out this is a fairly common problem with the BMW X5. A quick trip to Ebay and I purchased a replacement for just under $100.00 There were replacements as low as $39.00 but they were not OEM.

Replacing the BMW X5 Final Stage Unit took less than 15 minutes.

Only two Philips head screws needed to be removed to obtain access.

Unplug this connection and the fan will stop running.

Here’s what the new final stage looked like. Cost? About $100.00

Old Unit vs. New Unit. Problem solved for now. Everything is running as it is supposed to.

Congressional Pay, if I ran the Country

If I ran the country, Congressional Pay would be determined by the people of America at the end of each year based on the congress-persons performance. The fact that they get paid whether they do a great or terrible job now is ridiculous. What incentive do they have now to do what they said they would or try to make things better? They certainly get a lot of time off and benefits for life…

I look back to my time in the Military. I could do the bare minimum or work my butt off and the pay was the same. What incentive was there to really excel? On top of this you really had to screw up big time to ever get fired. This is the problem with government jobs. I only did 10 years in the Military. You know what benefits I get? None. I should have done a full 20 years, yet senators get benefits for life for only six years of service and not at some run down VA hospital. In the House of Representatives they only serve two years.

As a self employed business person I only get paid when I sell something or complete a job to my clients satisfaction and I pay over $1000 a month in health insurance for a family of three. Whatever happened to “They work for us?”

Windows Restore Virus | What a PITA!

Even with three different anti virus programs on my computers a virus seems to sneak through every year or two and wreak havoc on my system. It’s enough to make me want to get away from Microsoft products altogether and switch to Linux. Linux is not any more user friendly but there are not as many viruses written to attack Linux systems.

Luckily for me I have three computers on my desk and back up most of my important files to external hard drives. When one goes down I have a few others to work on.

Enough rambling, on to the story.

I was sitting at my computer when a pop up window appeared on my screen. It told me my system may be infected and started running multiple simulated system scans all the while throwing up additional alerts and warnings.

In the upper corner of the pop up it said Windows Recovery, but I’ve been around long enough to know this was not a genuine Microsoft product. I went to the task bar to pull up the task manager to kill the process but the virus had disabled the task manager. I then disconnected the cat 5 cable to disconnect from the internet. The virus then shut down the computer. When it came back on every icon from the desktop was gone. I shut down and restarted in safe mode with the F8 key. I then went to Start -> Run, and typed msconfig, which allowed me to access the start up menu and disable a number of files I did not recognize from starting when the computer started.

The next step was to Google ‘windows restore virus’ There are thousands of other people have also been hit by this, and a handful of solutions. The good news was that the virus did not actually delete any of my files, the bad news is that all of my files were hidden and it would take the next two hours to locate them all.

Downloading and installing a program called Malwarebytes from cnet downloads got rid of most of the the Windows Restore Virus but I am still experiencing lingering effects and have not yet rid myself entirely of this accursed virus. My next step is to delete all of the registry values the virus added.

AVG Antivirus
Malwarebytes

Even with the four anti virus programs and over 20 scans they keep coming up with additional viruses and Trojans that seem to go away for a scan or two and then come right back.

What a PITA! If I had to charge myself my hourly rate to fix this I’d be at $1200 and counting. I hope the creator of this Virus is caught and burnt at the stake. I’ll volunteer to light the first match.

Fenwick Real Estate

Q. How do you get a website to rank better for a particular search term?

A. You obtain a handful of links to it from other websites.

Fenwick Real Estate is an example of a page I am trying to promote. Currently it is not in the top 100 but after this post it should be. If I can find enough friends to link to the page who also think it is a wonderful page about Fenwick Real Estate it may even hit the top 10. The problem with promoting real estate pages is that they are all more or less the same. It’s not often a real estate site has great link bait or astounding content that can’t be found anywhere else. How do you make a real estate page that will get noticed by the search engines? Create something unique that other real estate pages don’t have. Add a well written description of the community, include professionally taken photographs, try to come up with features that other real estate agents are not showcasing on their sites.

Pageviews Skyrocket

Google analytics data shows my new Delaware Real Estate website went from a bounce rate of sixty down to twenty five. Pageviews are up from three per visit to over fourteen per visit and time on site has stretched from four minutes all the way up to twelve. I would call that a resounding success! The new site has only been live for a couple of days but leads have also doubled. Three months of hard work is starting to paying off. While Rehoboth Beach Real Estate, Lewes Delaware Real Estate and Millsboro Real Estate receive the most search traffic other areas such as Millville DE Real Estate and Milton DE Real Estate are also producing quality leads.

Mobile Homes for Sale in Delaware

After two months of hard work I’ve finally finished my brother-in-laws new version of his website about Mobile Homes for Sale in Delaware. The old site still brought in a good number of leads but the technology was badly outdated and much of the content was also out of date. One thing I’ve learned about websites is that you should never write about how things are today if you plan on keeping the site up for years. Much of what is true today will not be true tomorrow. For instance if I typed that Gas cost $3.00 a gallon, It would no longer be true. While most people’s first thought is not “I really want to buy a mobile home” most people are surprised after seeing a beach mobile home community in Delaware. These are not the slums you typically see on an episode of ‘My name is Earl’. Coastal Mobile Home communities in Delaware are more like summer cabins at the beach with resort like amenities including marinas, community swimming pools, club houses, athletic fields and many of these communities are located within walking distance to golf courses. I certainly don’t like it which is why I selected a keyword phrase without a lot of traffic ‘ REALTORS® who Steal ‘ and turned it into a page on my web site to call them out. WASHINGTON – As elected officials put on a dog-and-pony media show about a temporary shutdown of small parts of the federal government, the Libertarian Party calls for a permanent shutdown of most of the federal government.

“Crime would plummet as the government’s War on Drugs ended, no longer sustaining a giant violent black market and overfilling our prisons.

I buy and sell all the time on Ebay and I’ve been doing so for nearly 10 years. In over 300 transactions I’ve only had two go sour. One was a computer motherboard that was never shipped and at that time Ebay’s resolution center was not what it is today. About two weeks ago I won an auction for a wireless microphone for my video camera. These days most good Ebay sellers will have an item shipped in less than a week. Seeing as though it had been almost two weeks I logged into my account to check the status and I noticed the sellers Ebay account was no longer open and he had a ton of new negative feedback. Two or three clicks later I found myself at the Ebay resolution center page and within 30 seconds Ebay had opened and closed my case and sent me a full refund including shipping charges to my pay-pal account. Way to go Ebay! It’s rare that I am so happily surprised by an online companies quick service. Now if they could just lower their sellers fees….

Milton DE Real Estate

The area that would later be known as Milton Delaware was founded in 1672 by English colonists but not named Milton until 1807. The town is situated along the broadkill river which connects to the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Milton was well known as a ship building center in the 1800′s. Farming has been the other mainstay of the community and continues to be to this day. Milton DE Real Estate features Colonial and Victorian Architecture with many homes on the federal register of historic properties. By the 1970′s much of the town had become run down but the real estate boom of the late 1990′s and early 2000′s turned that around and a large percentage of the homes were restored to their original grandeur. Today the town of Milton Delaware looks like a Norman Rockwell portrait. Recently a craft beer company named Dogfish Head moved into town and built a good sized brewery. The Natural Bar Soap Company was founded by siblings Michael Brown and Erin Lee. I’ve been meaning to upgrade this wordpress install for over two years and I finally got around to it today. Unfortunately in the process I lost a couple dozen posts. Fortunately none of them were very important. This blog is host on a Godaddy server which I DO NOT recommend. There are both less expensive and significantly more user friendly solutions out there. Basically every post from 2010 and early 2011 were lost. That’s ok because 2010 sucked, maybe Godaddy somehow knew I really wanted to delete 2010 from my memory?
